Are You Cut Out To Be a Successful Online Entrepreneur?

By Luca

Welcome back

Are you cut out to be a successful online entrepreneur?

This is a question to really think about as 2009 draws to a close and 2010 is looming around the corner.

What you need more than anything else is the determination to succeed and the ability to remain challenged with life’s roller-coaster setbacks and failures. If you’re able to tilt your chin at challenges and refuse to give up you’ve already won half the battle.

Canadian humorist Stephen Leacock was born in the little town of Orillia, Ontario; and although he died over half a century ago, a large mural still graces the wall of a building on Front Street, displaying his portrait – and Leacock’s favorite quote: “I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work the more of it I have.”

There’s a great deal of truth to that quote – even though the quote actually wasn’t Leacock’s at all, but something he had borrowed – a motto to live by – from Thomas Jefferson!

The same motto could be applied to becoming a successful online entrepreneur.

The Harder I Work The More Success I Will Have

Hard Work To Expect:

  1. A learning curve, educate yourself right from the start.
  2. A battle with self-discipline – there are so many distractions on the net, and so many courses to take, ebooks to download. (I mention this because it’s a spectacularly common problem with online entrepreneurs!)
  3. A period of hard work at the beginning for each web site, blogs, and promotions you set up – but the more you do it, the easier it will get, each time.
  4. Several promotions and list building campaigns going at once, with more added regularly. Realistically, you will not replace your full-time income and have money to spare by promoting just one product. This however will come with time.

In order to be a successful online entrepreneur, you will almost certainly need:

  • A plan
  • A market
  • A mentor
  • A clear vision based on solid research
  • A separate bank account for your business
  • A business plan and sales funnel(s)
  • A safety net

You will also need to develop these attributes:

  • Commitment
  • Self-discipline
  • Determination
  • Confidence
  • Patience
  • Integrity
  • A sense of humor

Sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it?

Well, it is… and it isn’t. There is always hard work for the first few months – perhaps longer, depending on the time you have available.  Once you’ve set your goals and have a definite plan in place it gets easier to get the results you’re looking for.

Let’s be realistic though!  People always seem to envision setting up one or two sites, and having thousands of dollars roll in. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way, especially not at first!

Remember:

“I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work the more of it I have.”

So do you have what it takes to be a successful online entrepreneur?

I think we all do but also realize that it takes hard work, education, commitment and of course the ability and willingness to TAKE ACTION.

Be determined to succeed, work hard and luck and money will follow.

Powerful, powerful post Luca,

I think that everyone getting started in Internet Marketing should take a look at this post.

So many people out there are looking for that one thing that is going to make them rich overnight without having to lift a finger and there is no shortage of marketers out there to help them lighten their wallet in the process.

You have put together a great set of checkpoints and I honestly think that if your expanded on this post you could make a pretty darn good product, though the fact that you would be telling people the truth and that there is actually work involved might make it a hard sell ;-)

Really a great post Luca and the list of resources is a great one as well.

Hi,

Very nice post. I couldn’t agree more. Too many people jump in thinking they will get rich quick! If you are going to use Internet Marketing as your own business be prepared to work hard, set some goals and know that you can get what you want but it may take some time.

The realization that people have to work hard and work smart is what separates the wheat from the chaff in our industry – either they can’t/won’t put in the hours and effort and go nowhere, or they follow in your footsteps, Luca, and do what it takes to become successful online. Kudos for proving yourself to be part of the latter group, and also for sharing what you’ve learned with those coming up behind you!

Luca:

Very impressive post – you my friend have hit the nail directly on the head. There is way too much hype on the internet to get rich quick – When I started on the internet in 2006 I wish someone like yourself was there to set me straight – I would be $12000 richer today as that is how much has been lost on Internet gimmicks to date. Time and experience has made me wiser! Thanks for sharing.

Great post, nicely laid out with an awesome plan of action. Gave me several ideas that I had not thought about. I also appreciate the many informative links and resources you gave too. Thanks!

Here is a quote you may like from a personal mentor of mine some years ago, still works well to this day. “You bring about, what you think about”

Keep up the great work!
