Bloggers React To New FTC Compensation Disclosure Rules

There’s been quite a bit written about the new Federal Trade Commission disclosure rules in the past week or so. It’s been very enlightening to read the many different views about the changes to the disclosure rules and how they will affect blogging, especially affiliate blogging but can also be very confusing to many of us.

The best thing to do is to read the official FTC document – FTC Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising
and then get a copy on Mike Young’s report that provides general practical knowledge about what to do to stay out of trouble with the FTC. You can get a copy here: How to Comply with the New FTC Compensation Disclosure Guidelines

Even though Mike Young is a lawyer he makes it clear that it’s only a guideline and you should seek legal advice on the matter to make sure you’re adhering to the new regulations.

The FTC’s revised disclosure rules take effect December 1st so you have plenty of time to do some research and get your disclosure policy ready for your blogs and websites.

Personally I think that this is a good thing. The main purpose of the new ruling is to protect online consumers and if you’re running a legitimate business then you really have nothing to worry about.

I’ve added a Disclosure Page as I do have affiliate links throughout this blog and occasionally write reviews about products and services that I use or feel  would benefit my readers.

I used the free service at http://disclosurepolicy.org/ (not an affiliate Link) to create my basic disclosure page that should be sufficient to make the FTC happy. I’ll be doing more research and will change or update my disclosure page if necessary.

I’m not a lawyer and can’t advise you on what the best solution is for your business but do hope that you look into complying with the new rules.

I’m including links to some interesting blog posts that I’ve read on the subject that will help you in understanding the FTC’s revised disclosure rules a little better.

“That $11,000 fine is not true. Worst-case scenario, someone receives a warning, refuses to comply, followed by a serious product defect; we would institute a proceeding with a cease-and-desist order and mandate compliance with the law.

3 Steps to Creating Your Online Sales Funnel Plan

Recently I took a look at my online business sales and marketing plan and realized that I don’t have all the important pieces in place.  I thought I did but in the excitement of starting my online business I rushed through the most important step – the planning phase.  As a result I’m taking a step back and re-evaluating my plan and making the necessary changes.

The planning stage is especially important when you’re creating your sales and marketing strategy. Take the time necessary to map out how your content, products, services, and marketing are all going to work together to build your profitable online business.

If you’re new to Internet Marketing take these steps now, right away. If you’ve been in the business for awhile it may be time to take a step back and look at your original marketing plan (you do have one, right?) and re-evaluate it to make sure you have all the pieces in place.

Step One:

Promote high quality products that will be of use and benefit to your potential customers. The products could be affiliate products or you could create your own high quality products. First impressions really do matter in business especially the online business as you may only get one chance to gain your prospects trust. So starting off on the right foot with your customer service plan is very important in building your business. Quality products, from the very first freebie to your largest ticket item, will help you gradually build a positive reputation for yourself. It’s also important to remember that any future dealings you have that may result in repeat business should make the customer feel as good as they were treated the first time and maybe even better.

Step Two:

Plan your product line. A sales funnel is a series of increasingly more valuable and possibly more expensive products or services to offer your customers. However, people are going to enter your funnel at different stages. Some may begin by taking advantage of your free offer while some may jump right in and buy a product or service. Create a plan for each type of customer. Plan to have products ready for each level of your funnel. Figure out which ones might be of interest and useful to your customers. Provide them with information on how each product can benefit them and also show them how your products can be implemented in their own businesses.

For instance, if your freebie product (the entry point of your funnel) is a report on “PLR Content” then your next more valuable product could be an ebook “How To Use PLR for Profits” at a low cost. The next level could be a monthly paid membership site providing high quality PLR content for their niche. Remember that at each level you’ll want to point out the benefits of these new products to your customers. If your products are of interest, add quality and usefulness to the customer they will become repeat customers.

Step Three:

Maintain the Communication. In addition to planning for a line of high quality products and services, you’ll also want to establish consistent communication with your prospects and customers. You can do this by continuing the flow of valuable information in the form of blog posts, email messages and maybe even a newsletter.

By continuing to stay in touch and providing valuable information you will not only keep customers in your sales funnel longer but it could also result in referrals to your business. You could soon find yourself starting the process all over again with new prospects.

Planning is the key to online business success. Create your sales funnel plan, marketing plan and content plan and work to integrate the three into a seamless and efficient system. Consistency is also very important and by using the same plan over and over again with each new person, your online business will grow. All of your customers will be receiving the same great quality products and services you have to offer.

I’m taking these steps seriously to improve my online business and also realize that the planning process can’t be rushed and that  it needs to be reviewed and possibly tweaked on a regular basis.

Are you happy with your online sales and marketing plan?  Do you have a sales funnel in place?

Can Twitter Help an Offline Business?

Maybe you are not online but have a brick and mortar business. How can online applications help you? First of all, just about everyone is online these days. You can use online tools such as Twitter to enhance your offline business.

Marketing for offline businesses is not limited to offline marketing tools. You might think that since your business is stationary, you only have certain resources for growing the business. Not so. Your business is good but it can always get better.

Let’s say that you are a small business owner. You have done direct marketing, viral (word-of-mouth) marketing and used other advertising media like newspaper ads to get the word out about your business. You have a decent amount of clients but you can have more. You still haven’t tapped into the online world for customers.

It is a fact that some people don’t read newspapers or visit trade shows. They could be missing your valuable service. Those same people may stay connected to the world at large with social networking online. They could connect with you there if you have a Twitter account.

As an expert in your field of business, you can provide useful information to other twitterers on your business. More and more business owners are using Twitter as a business tool and you can find those people to trade business techniques. Improving technique can improve business.

Twitter is also a social network for personal enjoyment. People interact with others from their hometown, people with similar interests and others who post interesting tweets. Any one of these groups could use what your business has to offer. Those in your hometown, for instance, who don’t know about you, can learn about you. You might not be running an online business but you can create a webpage that tells about your business with contact information for anyone looking to use your services.

Just like an online business, Twitter can be used to answer customer service questions quickly. Many of your customers are undoubtedly online and Twitter is a way to answer their questions without them having to drive to your business location to get answers. And, you don’t have to sit in front of a computer to answer them. Twitter can be accessed from your mobile phone (with Internet support) so you can work on the go.

Twitter offers tools that can be used by offline businesses. The most popular applications are customer service and promotional tools but you will find a whole lot more.
