How To Add an Exit Popup To Your Blog Using Aweber

In a previous post I showed you how to add an inline optin box to your blog. In the video below I’ll demonstrate how to add an exit popup optin box on your blog using Aweber.

Pop ups; you either love them or you hate them. They can be distracting to your blog visitors but at the same time if done properly can add value to your readers and new subscribers for your newsletter.

Pop up optin boxes are a very effective ways to add subscribers to you mailing list, especially in niche markets. Creating popups on your blog is relatively easy to do. There are however a few different types of popup windows you can use.

aweber optin types

I prefer the exit popup. So when someone leaves a page on your website they get a popup window thanking them for visiting your site and a gentle reminder to subscribe to your newsletter.

The only negative that I see to the exit popup is that it’s triggered even if the reader clicks on a link within the post.  As far as the script is concerned that’s and exit from the page.  That could bother someone that was planning to spend more time reading your blog.

Another very important consideration for any pop up is how often it shows up. Look at the pop-up recurrence section in the image above and choose the option that suites your blog best. Keep in mind that you don’t want to annoy your readers so choose wisely. I’d recommend the 3rd option – Display every x days.

Testing the different types of pop up optin boxes over time will determine which one gives you the best conversion rate.

Aweber is my autoresponder list provider of choice and highly recommend it. For more information on autoresponders check out How to Choose the Best List Provider – Autoresponder Service

So what do you think of Popup Optin boxes:

  • Do they annoy you?
  • Are they distracting?
  • Do you use them?
  • Which type do you prefer

Leave a comment with your thoughts on the video or what you think of pop up opt-in boxes.

To your questions I do not care for them and at times find them frustrating as a visitor but as a marketer what I like does not work and they do work so I use them. I prefer light box on exit pops.

The one I use triggers off of mouse movement so it does not effect people clicking my links.

Thanks for the comment Mike. I’ll be testing the other optin box options over time to see which one works best.

I think exit pop ups are great on sales pages. As for on a blog, I prefer to use the lightbox and get the visitor on the way in and not on the way out.

Great tips Luca!

I like the video showing exactly how to do this.

BTW: My opinion on pop-ups as a visitor is obviously that I don’t like them. Some actually get very annoying.

However, from a marketers standpoint I know that they do work. I have not implemented them as much as I should, based on my feelings as a visitor, which I do still need to overcome.

I tend to prefer the light box myself, and get better results with it than with the exit. But it something that should be tested in each situation.

I personally don’t like exit pop-ups. As a visitor, if you’re content is good, I’ve probably already subscribed to the newsletter or RSS feed. I like the exit pop-up better than the light box, though, because at least you’ve given me a chance to judge your content before asking me to subscribe.

That’s just my 2 cents, but I’m a starving blogger, so take it with a grain of salt :)

I’m another one that doesn’t like pop-ups. Yes, they work but I just can’t bring myself to implement something that I personally don’t care for…that’s the height of hypocrisy.

Your video provides a great tutorial on using Aweber to set up an exit popup. I don’t think that anyone would have any trouble setting one up if they followed along with your video. I don’t like them, but I know that they bring results so I use them. There are lots of things that I don’t particularly like, but work with because they are beneficial to me.

Is there any online web app performs like Aweber but free?

Exit pop-up is a great idea, cause you at least give your visitor their last chance to subscribe in your newsletter. However, as a visitor (for example), I just ignore exit pop-ups once I leave the site. It isn’t that appealing for me.

I personally don’t mind exit pops as long as it’s easy to close them and there are no ‘hidden’ problems caused by them – i.e. hacks, cookie-stuffing, etc.

BTW, a quick search at the various Javascript sites will show you a code to stop it from happening on every click – it uses the OnClick function, and you can set your links to open it only when they click an external link.

Thanks for the useful post and video. I have my personal doubts about exit pops and agree with previous comments that they are best for one page websites. I think the purpose of your site/blog should determine how you use entry or exit pops.
