Three Steps to Write SEO Content and Still Sound Natural

When it comes to tactics and strategies to improve search engine results, there’s really nothing more important than the content on your website. Content, after all, is what the search engines analyze to determine the validity of a webpage and website. For this very reason, many webmasters focus their content efforts with the search engines in mind.

However focusing entirely on your search engine results is a mistake because search engines don’t buy your products or services, they don’t click on your ads and affiliate links and they don’t contribute directly to your bottom line – customers do.

This is why it’s essential that you write your content for your audience first and the search engines second. This, however, presents a conundrum because sometimes it’s difficult to combine the two. Keywords don’t always fit into an article or blog post naturally.

Here are three steps to write your SEO content and still sound natural.

Step One

Research your keywords and keyword phrases. Choose one to focus on in your article and then set it aside.

Step Two

Write your content, keeping your main keyword topic in mind, without even thinking about keywords and keyword phrases. For example, if your keyword phrase is, “How to housetrain a puppy,” then you’ll write an article about how to housetrain a puppy however as you’re writing it, you’re not worrying about if you’re using the keyword phrase or not. Your entire focus is on writing a quality article for your audience.

Step Three

Working in your keywords. Once your article or blog post has been written, then it’s time to go back with your keyword at the ready. Read through your article and insert this keyword or keyword phrase where it seems to fit naturally. Keep in mind the fact that search engines are also looking for relevant words so if you’re writing about puppy housebreaking, you can also use housetraining and potty training occasionally to break up the monotony and help the search engines recognize the relevance of your article.

When inserting your primary keyword or keyword phrase keep in mind the places the search engine spiders are going to look.

  • Your headline
  • Your subheadings
  • Your first paragraph
  • Your last paragraph
  • In the body of the article

When using your keywords aim for a density of about three to seven percent. Anymore and search engines might recognize your content as being keyword stuffed. To determine percentage simply take the number of times you use your keyword and divide it by the total words. Therefore, if you have a 450 word article and you use your keyword 18 times you have a keyword density of four percent.

Once you’ve completed your article, read it aloud to see if it sounds natural. This is one of the best ways to evaluate it. Remember to keep your audience in mind first and the search engines second – this strategy will always pay off.

Good, solid advice, Luca! Reading one’s post aloud not only shows them if the writing flows, but if they do it while recording the audio it provides them with a podcast too…

For those with a spouse or friend willing to help, having someone else read it aloud to you works even better – you know in advance what it says, and may compensate for your intended flow. Since the material is new to them, they’ll experience it like a new reader to your article or blog would.

It’s amazing how many times someone else will catch errors that were not obvious to me. Sure helps to have another pair of eyes proofreading the article

Definitely a great idea to read them aloud. Not sure why but I know that I can read it and it sounds fine but if I read it aloud I always find the stumbling blocks.

I see it too often where someone posts content but doesn’t read it though themselves, it makes them look very unprofessional. So by following what you say is a great way to overcome that.

This is great advice. Many bloggers find themselves either over-emphasizing or neglecting SEO. They will find it useful.

Personally, I always make sure to have keywords in title and sub headings. As you said, these areas are considered by spiders and hence, help a lot!

Great post.

I have a bad habit of not considering keywords when writing an article…good for content not so good for SEO.

When writing an article I do it from WP Admin and frequently use the preview to look at it from the perspective of how it will look. This not only helps me catch typos, it helps me look at the flow, etc. It looks so much different on the blog as compared to what you see in the editor or a word processor like Word.

I have never thought about setting the keyword aside after doing the research. I’ve always, if I’ve done any research at all, been focused on using the keywords as many times as possible (without being stuffed).

It sounds more interesting, from the perspective of a writer, to not focus on the keyword per se, but on the context.

I have always read my articles and blog posts out loud before publishing them. It’s crucial for me, since I always find better words to use, and I always find some misspelled ones.

Good post Luca. Many times an article will not sound or read naturally if you are not careful with your keyword selection and how you use keywords and long tail phrases. Three good tips and I agree with reading your post or article after finishing it. This will aid you in determining if it flows naturally or not.

Nice post Luca.

I agree that you should put your audience first and search engine second. When you write for your readers, Google will automatically give you high rankings because Google loves to list the pages that provide value in their search results.

Also when you are writing naturally, you will tend to include LSI keywords without your conscious. This will help a lot in SE.

Luca,
I am teaching a series of classes on writing keyword rich and relevant posts in my blogging class. I taught the first one last Monday, and will be following up this week. I might be quoting your blog. I will be back here when I am preparing my class.
It was a lot of fun teaching this class where we had a major brainstorming session on how to write a nice post using keywords in the content area that actually made an informative post.
Your blog certainly gives a lot of valuable information.

Great keyword technique! Some people find it confusing when it comes with the percentage range. Opinions of other people really vary. But, if you can see, the only important here is to make your writing natural. Remember, audiences visit your page because the usefulness of your article and not plainly because of the keyword.
